Orangefield 1st XI v Donard
Orangefield considered themselves to have dropped 4 points over the last two games with two home draws, so it was important today to go after the 3 points right from the first whistle.
The home side did just that and were 1-0 up in the first few minutes when the Donard centre-half hesitated on the ball and let in Harvey who rounded the keeper and slid the ball home.
Soon after big Clarkey got on the score sheet to make it 2-0 and the home side kept piling the pressure on an unsure Donard defence.
Dean Cousins whipped in a good free kick from the left hand side, the keeper just touching it onto the crossbar. The ball dropped in the area and again Clarkey was first to react and side footed into the net to make it 3-0. With the Orangefield defence looking comfortable, the midfield pushed forward in their droves and a nice triangle created some space for Jonny Gibson, who stepped past a Donard defender and fired a good left foot strike into the corner of the net. Tony Craig was next up, hitting a great shot from a yard out at the back post after the ball was flicked on at the corner of the six yard box. Seeing the goals fly in, the defence were looking to get in on the act and Wilsy was first to step up, striking a good drive into the far corner of the net. A nice goal, though soon to be bettered as Andy D’Arcy picked the ball up in midfield and drove into the Donard box, beating Clarkey and a Donard defender before firing into the far corner past a despairing goalkeeper.
Half-time: 7- 0
At 7-0, Orangefield found it hard to get started again after the break and Donard were able to get back into the game for a period of the second half, though unable to capitalise on any possession they had. The home side fell asleep for a brief moment after the exertions of the first half and let Donard in to score, but they were back to 7 in front again as Clarkey completed his hat-trick with a ‘slight’ deflection at the other end.
A good win today, fully deserved by the team after a great display in the first half.
Next Saturday’s game though will be much tougher and the same commitment will be required if Orangefield want to go joint top of the league.
